The final frontier protecting contemporary art galleries from the relentless encroachment of the auction houses has been emphatically breached with the announcement that Damien Hirst is creating an exhibition of new works for display and sale at the London headquarters of Sotheby’s.

The preview of “Beautiful Inside My Head Forever”, as the exhibition is titled, will launch the new art market season on 5 September while the auction itself is scheduled to take place over two dates, 15 and 16 September, suggesting that a catalogue of at least 40 major works will be offered on the evening of the earlier date with an extended day session of more affordable material including smaller read more »

A record number of people visited the British Museum in London last year to see China's famous Terracotta Army exhibition on display.

More than 850,000 people viewed the attraction, giving the museum its highest attendance figures since the Tutankhamun display of 1972.

The collection boosted overall visitor figures from 2007-08 to six million.

Visiting numbers for Tate Modern, the National Gallery and the National History Museum did not exceed that.

Demand was so great to see the 2,000-year-old iconic figures that museum opening hours had to be extended. read more »

A new Van Gogh retrospective set to go on display in both the US and Europe examines the artist's relationship with light and, more importantly, dark. Van Gogh would often hand-copy pages from novels he was reading that referred to both the physical and mystical aspects of the night. Van Gogh and the Colors of the Night,” jointly organized with Sjraar van Heugten, head of collections at the Van Gogh Museum, will open at the Modern on Sept. 21 and remain on view till Jan. 5 before traveling to Amsterdam. read more »

In his review last week, Alfred Hickling awarded Tate Liverpool's new Gustav Klimt exhibition just two stars, and said he was "left with the impression of a hyped catwalk show". He added: "The ruthless commercial exploitation of blockbuster exhibitions is nothing new, yet it sits particularly uneasily with a show whose unique selling point is a full-scale reconstruction of the Beethoven Frieze."

The gallery's director, Christoph Grunenberg, responds... read more »

What exactly is an exhibition copy? If the artist oversaw its creation, why isn't it an original? The Cai exhibit, which drew huge crowds to the Guggenheim, raises questions that many museum goers have probably never considered. And when we're talking about contemporary art made from common or mass-produced materials, how do we know when a work of art is the 'real thing'? read more »

The broad time span covered by this exhibition (1400-1600) and its Europe-wide approach make it the first to provide an overview of Renaissance portraiture. It explores portraiture as a genre in its own right, focusing principally on painting but including medals, sculptures, drawings and engravings while leaving aside the donor portrait. The aim of the exhibition is to show that the Renaissance marked not only the beginning and maturation of po read more »

"New York graffiti is the stuff of legend. At least, it was: a messenger boy calling himself TAKI 183 is credited with launching the craze in the early 1970s, and later, when the city was fighting crime and recession, the scene exploded in the city's subway." read more »

The Walker Gallery's new exhibition about the golden age of rail is just the ticket
