A founder member of the Young British Artists group has sent shockwaves through the art world by committing suicide. They say giving away art to be auctioned off at charitable events costs artists money, and often they don't even get a tax receipt.
Island sculptor Carl Phillis considers himself a starving artist. He works days at The Bulk Barn in Charlottetown to make ends meet. Recently, yet another request for an artwork for a charity auction turned him off the whole idea.
"They want our art, but they don't want us to go to the function," said Phillis.
"They want this piece of us, really, they love it, and yet when it comes to asking us if we want a glass of wine, we don't get the glass of wine." read more »
