This month both Christie’s and Sotheby’s are showing a few spectacular Rococo antiques that are not to be missed. They are whimsical in form, carved with mastery and adorned with amazing gilt bronze mounts.
The presale view for Christie’s May 20 auction, which begins May 16, features several traffic-stopping pieces, including Lot 382, a Louis XV giltwood console table from around 1750 that seems to defy gravity, along with an enormous matching mirror. Carved garlands of blooming flowers curl around the frame of the seven-and-a-half-foot-tall mirror, which also supports open-work carvings of dragons, life-size birds, shells and resplendent cabbage leaves. On the console’s apron, above highly exaggerated cabriole legs, is a pierced frieze with oak leaves and a bouquet of roses. The stretcher is festooned with lilies and acorns, all positioned slightly off center. Both pieces are both quintessential Rococo.
